When Is Duct Cleaning Necessary?

Monday, November 4th, 2013 at 10:51 am

The ductwork in your home is extensive: it moves air through walls, floors, and ceilings unseen. The conditioned air from your HVAC system needs these sealed channels leading to your vents to keep you comfortable throughout the year.

Ductwork must maintain a tight seal along its length to prevent a loss of air pressure, which would cut down on its air flow and damage its heating/cooling ability. There is a downside to this tight sealing, however: dust that enters through the vents can build up inside these sealed channels. You won’t see it, but your ducts may gather a layer of dust during normal operation. Duct cleaning is a task you should take seriously and schedule regularly to protect your air quality and the operation of your HVAC system.

We recommend you get duct cleaning done at least once a year; schedule it as part of your yearly maintenance for either your air conditioner or your heater. You may need duct cleaning sooner than the regular annual visit if you notice a dust buildup inside your living spaces. If you find you are doing more dusting and cleaning than usual to get rid of layers of dust across furniture, it’s possible that dirt has infiltrated the inside of your ducts. If you have gone without duct cleaning for a few years, you should definitely schedule it as soon as possible, since the dirt and debris may already be negatively affecting your indoor air quality.

If the air filter for your HVAC system is excessively clogged (make sure you change it once a month during heating and cooling season), it’s another sign that you’ll need to schedule duct cleaning: a clogged filter often means dust is starting to build-up throughout the ductwork.

Getting professionals to handle your duct cleaning will also mean you’ll find out if your ducts have any issues that require repairs, such as breaks. Breaks lead to even greater dirt and dust contamination, and they must get sealed as soon as possible. Call on the Melbourne, FL duct cleaning experts at Next Generation Air & Heat Inc. today.
